Recent surveys on artificial intelligence adoption in businesses in Peru reveal a consistent pattern: executives already use AI daily, but almost always individually and disconnected from their organization’s actual data. According to data published by Gestión.pe, sectors such as banking, retail and manufacturing report growing openness, with uses concentrated on drafting communications, document synthesis and exploratory analysis.

The problem is not low adoption. It’s that this use—mostly through public versions of ChatGPT, Copilot or Gemini—operates on generic knowledge: without access to internal documentation, without integration with the company’s transactional systems (ERP, CRM) and without traceability of responses. When an executive summarizes a contract with a public model, that model is unaware of the company’s standard clauses, its usual counterparties or internal negotiation precedents.

The relevant transition is not from “not using AI” to “using AI”. It’s from using it as a personal tool to deploying it as organizational infrastructure: systems that consume proprietary documentation, respond with real context and execute processes autonomously. That is the gap that most Peruvian companies have yet to bridge, and where measurable value concentrates.

  2. Embeddings: each fragment is converted into a numerical vector using a semantic representation model—for example, OpenAI’s text-embedding-3-small or open-source nomic-embed-text—that captures the meaning of the text.
  3. Vector store: vectors are stored in a vector database such as pgvector, Pinecone, Weaviate or ChromaDB.
  4. Retrieval and generation: when queried, the system retrieves the most relevant fragments by cosine similarity and passes them to the LLM as context. The model responds based solely on that verifiable information.

Evaluation of these systems uses specific metrics: faithfulness (is the answer supported by the retrieved context?), answer relevancy and context precision, measurable with frameworks like RAGAS. An AI chatbot for enterprises built on RAG typically exceeds 85% faithfulness on well-structured corpora, compared to hallucination rates of 15–30% in models without grounding.

AI agents: from responding to executing

AI agents extend RAG with the ability to act. Using the ReAct pattern (Reasoning + Acting), an agent can query a SQL database, invoke an external API, send a notification or chain multiple reasoning steps autonomously. This enables automating complete workflows: extract data from the ERP → detect anomalies → generate the report → send it to the area owner, without human intervention at each step.

Supervised ML for data analysis

For demand forecasting, risk scoring or fraud detection, machine learning models applied to business—gradient boosting (XGBoost, LightGBM), tabular networks like TabNet—produce quantifiable predictions with auditable metrics: RMSE in regression, F1-score or AUC-ROC in classification. They are complementary to RAG: one answers questions about documents, the other predicts on historical structured data.

Limitations and conditions of use

RAG systems and agents are not universal solutions. These are their real limitations:

  • Corpus quality: outdated or internally inconsistent documents directly degrade precision. Garbage in, garbage out applies more rigorously here than in traditional ML.
  • Language and sector-specific terminology: embedding models have variable performance in technical Spanish or local sector terminology. Evaluating with your own benchmark before production is mandatory, not optional.
  • Multi-hop questions: queries that require crossing information from multiple sources simultaneously (e.g. “contracts from customer X that expire this quarter with margin < 15%”) degrade precision if the retrieval pipeline is not optimised for that pattern.
  • Operating cost at scale: for volumes above 10,000 queries per day, the cost of the LLM API can be significant and justifies evaluating open-source models deployed on-premise.
  • Continuous monitoring: without a production evaluation system, quality silently degrades when the corpus changes or user behaviour shifts.

What this means for the Peruvian business sector

The predominantly personal adoption shown by current data has a clear strategic reading: companies that systematise this use first—converting individual habit into organizational infrastructure—accumulate advantages that compound over time.

The three use cases with the fastest ROI in Latin American contexts are:

  1. Internal assistants with RAG over proprietary documentation: reduction in internal information search time of 40–60%, according to benchmarks reported in regional financial sector implementations.
  2. Process automation with agents: email classification, invoice data extraction, periodic report generation. Tasks consuming 2–4 hours daily per employee are automatable in weeks.
  3. Predictive models for operations: with 12–24 months of historical data, it is possible to deploy demand forecasting or anomaly detection models with performance superior to baseline in 6–8 weeks.
